The Virtual Law Journal (VLJ) is an electronically published journal concentrating on legal aspects of computing, communications and other components of modern information technology worldwide. Graduate students, scholars, professors and practitioners collaborate in order to provide the VLJ online and free of charge.
The VLJ was first launched in July 2004. It was initiated by the Virtual Law Firm (http://vlf.juridicum.su.se), which is a project related to the Postgraduate Master Programme in Law and Information Technology at Stockholm University.
The aim of the Virtual Law Firm is to create a global network of professionals specialised in information technology law. At the moment it has 86 members from 33 countries. The members of the Virtual Law Firm participate or have participated in the Master Programme at Stockholm University.
The VLJ was launched in order to enhance this global network, and to spread knowledge concerning IT law. As the VLJ is provided free of charge, it also enables greater access to legal information.
The articles published in the VLJ are directed to all aspects of law and information technology. This embraces, inter alia, sub-fields such as regulation of telecommunications and data networks, data protection and privacy issues, freedom of information and rights of access, intellectual property rights in computer software and databases, contracting issues related to IT, security and vulnerability issues and international co-operation and harmonisation of national laws. Further on, some articles focus on the uses of information technology, in particular those having a legal orientation, such as legal information retrieval, document management in law firms, automated decision-making and artificial intelligence.
